I already asked a friend (from the UK) to bring me peanut butter in which I'm rationing until July 12th. I'm looking forward to other American treats; I don't even like hot dogs, but I find myself craving them along with bbqs where brats, Sam Adams, and burgers are served. I'm also going to have to have Chicago's stuffed pizza! Not to mention, I wouldn't mind seeing a baseball game--yeah, I said it.

A Canadian friend, who I met in Ghana is currently in Chicago, and I made her a spreadsheet of restaurants and festivals she needs to go to. So, I looked up addresses, gave recommendations, and it made me realize how much I miss home. I will definitely go to BluFin and Tango Sur--among other personal favorites. Does anyone have any other good finds? Let me know!

I also would like everyone to know that Goals 4 Ghana, a charity that I have started with my good friends, Matt and Stephanie Gollan, now has a website: www.goals4ghana.org Please take a look and post any comments you have may have! It plagues every youth sport in the world. But why do we have parents and coaches shouting all the wrong things? We have all had these type of coaches, and please take the moment to imagine how ridiculous it is. I truly believe these stalkers have the best intentions at heart and bring passion and enthusiasm to the game of football. Coaches, parents, families, teachers, and mentors want to build positive learning environments in everything but the pitch, why is that? Instead they build a detrimental and sometimes damaging atmosphere where learning does not occur--and then everyone wonders why are the players not improving.

I am reminded of one of my u13 matches: a Mom on my team punched an opposing Dad square in the face, cut his nose, and the police had to intervene. Please note, there are few of these stories, and that I find it difficult to recall any matches that I played before the age of 13...games and winning will be forgotten--but the end product, quality players will be the true result!

Ghanaians live for winning--but some clubs take a different approach. Take the CFC u10 squad for example: these kids are truly committed as they do not have a league to play in. But instead, they train twice a week and occasionally play friendly matches along with tournaments. There's honor in playing for a club, being promoted to the u12s, and playing in the league. But at the younger age levels, the main focus is always development! We do not record results and create a fun and safe learning environment for the players to become the best they can be. The biggest part of this is clearly the community. And I know what you're thinking. Yes, even the parents do not focus much on winning. But you don't have to wait long as they expect the U14 squad to start building a winning mentality so they can be "winners" at age 17 and beyond! Learning how to win is an important part of player development, just let it happen at the higher levels. By the way, this does not give free reign for parents and coaches to punch out opposing personnel. :)

When American youth coaches break free of the "winning is everything" mentality, we can then begin to compete with the powerhouses of the world. In the last WC, we were the only team to draw against Italy. We have the resources and athletic ability--where is that we lack? My debatable answer: Coaching. Obviously, some countries residents literally play for their lives--and to play in that regard, no one can compete. But for the most part, if we try to improve as coaches and become less rigid in our training, then we compete in 2010 and eventually win the World CUP!!!!

Enjoy!

James Fort: A detour on the tro-tro adventure. The U14 squad traveled about 2 hours to a Dutch Academy to play in a friendly match, and geeeez...I was amazed by the site! Two turf pitches, one grass pitch, dormitories, cafeteria, schools, security, doctors, physical therapists...a proper academy. This facility is honestly a life-changing opportunity for the players. Even though they are taken away from their families, they know that they will receive a quality education and coaching. But the most important piece is obviously the education as players get hurt, players don't develop as expected, and they do not become professionals. But these kids are looked after extremely well.

Cantonments players don't complain when they play on the rocky dirt pitch while the open sewer (that surrounds the pitch) puts off a rather unpleasant and rancid odor. When the ball gets kicked in the sewer, they pick it out and continue to play as if it is not covered in __________ (Yes, you fill in the blank). While we struggle with bibs, cones, and balls the players are still able to be amazingly technically gifted. Some players do not attend school because they either cannot afford it, do not have parents to assist them, or have failed out. CFC players do not have 3 meals a day as they cannot afford it and fast because of it. Don't get me started on injuries as they usually happen to players who do not have a concurrent plan.

With all these obstacles facing us, we were able to draw against a much more disciplined u12 (yes, u12) side. I have never seen a u12 team play like the way they did that day. And the best player on the opposing side appeared to be 10! But overall, I was pleased with my players as they have never played on a turf pitch before. It was a wonderful opportunity, and I know I share the same vision as the Dutch Academy. Despite the major differences, both academies have developed quality players and hopefully you'll see the products in 2010. World Class, and truly Night and Day.
_______________
Last week was a long one. Not only did a former EPL scout come out, but the head of Projects Abroad, and an American college coach spent a bit of time with Cantonments. Regardless of the amount of money that is invested, players can still develop and move onto something so life-changing that I (and most of the western world) won't ever be able to imagine. I keep on asking myself, "What if, just what if, we can get him to a university or professional football club?"

Picture(s)...depending how fast the internet is...

Obruni FC...action shot!

Half-time...again!

Well, it's been exactly 3 months since I left home, and I have another 3 remaining. It has been filled with amazing sites and some hardships, but overall, I'm impressed with the performance of the entire club, especially the youth. The youth continue to play well in their friendly matches, and I just hope they will continue it at the premiership level this year. As for the seniors, I have trained them nearly for 3 months, and with 45 players, I made the first 5 cuts or what Ghanaians call "sacking a player". So, I sacked 5 players, to make the squad a bit easier to manage and to hold it at 40. I'm anticipating the league to start in 2-3 weeks, and by the end of the week, I hope to have the squad cut down to the maximum number that we can register, 35. I am very confident after this preseason, we will be ready to make a strong start and immediately show the league the new senior side of Cantonments.

I celebrated my 3 months in Ghana with a double cheeseburger and fries/chips. I spent nearly 19 GHC, and if you know anything about me (my frugal ways), then you know this was very difficult for me to do...especially in Ghana, where 21 GHC means I can eat for one week. But before I ate the enormous meal, I woke up with headaches for nearly 10 days before the meal. The following day, my headaches were gone, and have remained that way for about 4 days. I must be a true American. :) The dinner was so delicious, but it still didn't compare to the burgers they grill back home!

I also took the time to splurge on a haircut. Trust me, it was quite the experience as a typical haircut for me consists of spending $8 and receiving a free Spanish lesson (the stylists do not speak English). Krew is a men's only salon in Ghana, and for 10 GHC, I received a haircut, shampoo, facial cleanse, and facial/head/shoulder massage. I felt so out of place when I realized I was the only one not getting both a manicure and pedicure. I will never let anyone go near my feet! Did I tell you they gave me a hot towel as well? I was impressed, and I will probably go back immediately before I return home. But wow, what the experience!

The Obrunis also celebrated their 3rd win of the season, and we remain undefeated. To recap, we won our first match against a local team 7-2, we beat the Cantonments 2nd/3rd team 3-2, and we beat a University squad 2-0. The volunteers are certainly quality players, and hopefully, we can continue our winning ways when we play the full 2nd team of Cantonments and the requests from other local clubs!

I also spent a good amount of time on a tro-tro adventure with my housemate, Heather. We decided to take a few random tro-tros around town and see if we really know Accra. It turns out that we do, and we didn't get lost. We were a bit disappointed by this, but we still had fun. We tried some questionable foods, and we didn't get sick. I didn't even know what they were called, and the only wreckless thing was taking the tro-tros as the drivers tend to have questionable driving skills or none at all. My housemates and I finished out the weekend with go-karting, and it's much different in Ghana!

Well, it has been a busy and fun last couple weeks, and I will post pictures on my next post! I hope all is well with everyone back home!

World Cup Qualifiers

Cameroon vs. Togo, a world cup qualifier for 3 GHC or nearly $2!!! Could it get much better than this??? Yes, it can; Togo won 1-0 after an Adebayor 11' goal! And this is a very good thing as the last time Togo lost (to Mali), violence ensued! So, I'm glad the majority of the stadium was happy and was able to witness a tremendous atmosphere with loud chants and some drumming! Also, Adebayor had an opportunity to close the game with his second goal on a penalty kick, but it sailed high and wide. FYI: I know a certain former Fulham attacker who would have buried it! Can you guess who?

Ghana also played against Benin this past weekend, and they won 1-0. But I'm glad that I didn't travel the 5 hours (one way) to Kumasi as the match was awful! Ghana scored in the first minute and didn't go forward too many more times the rest of the match! This is clearly not Ghanaian football, but at least we know Ghana can hold onto a lead (against a weaker and smaller side--Benin) for 89 minutes! I'm pretty sure every Ghanaian was disappointed because everyone was predicting a 7-0 victory.

Here's a picture of the Obruni So, I decided to lace up my boots after about 3 weeks of not playing. Ten other obrunis and I challenged a local team to play in a match today, and wow! We were ready to play! We won 7-2, and I found the back of the net in about the 7th minute. Holding down the right flank is a tough job--especially on a fast and huge dirt pitch! In about the 8th minute, I switched to right back and held down the fort while a Frenchman scored a hat trick! I can't believe I played 90 minutes, and it was high noon. Did I mention we were wearing long sleeves? I was boiling, and I thought I was going to pass out!

Last weekend, the first team played against the University of Legon. Unfortunately, we lost, but I was impressed with their play especially because it was an away match and on a grass pitch. Three players promised me goals for my birthday, and they certainly followed through. In the 10th minute, our powerhouse of the squad found the end of a set piece and scored. And the celebration was priceless as he went directly to me for a bear hug! We didn't have to wait to long for an amazing goal from our most dependable striker! He scored on a volley after a great ball from the powerhouse. But troubles were just around the corner as the third player (who promised me a goal) scored an own-goal. This puts us at 2-1, and in the 60th minute, our immature keeper was sent off for kicking a player. This didn't set us up for a wonderful finish as going down to 10 men is hardly a way to win a match. Our squad was exhausted, and we fell 3-2 in the final 7 minutes. But overall, I was impressed with the performance being away, on a grass pitch, and falling to 10 men.

Some things are just really bizarre. The away fans were heckling...me! I was confused by this tactic as this tends to happen to players, but apparently, I'm an easy target. But I've been heckled worse as a player, and they kept on shouting Jose Mourinho! This was really strange as I look nothing like the Portuguese Manager...You decide!

"Friendly" Matches

Well, the seniors are on a roll...winning the past two friendly matches. This morning's match was a great one, as Everton, our opponent, won the division last year. It was hardly a "friendly" match as there was still the some crazy Ghanaian tackles, luckily, not by my squad. I'm still confused on why I haven't witnessed a broken leg...don't worry, I don't want to witness it either! These games are to get ready for the league, and I hope we're not peaking early. We are sitting 2-1-1 during the spring season. The truth is that no one actually knows when the league starts, as the GFA runs on "African time"--as my colleagues say. But hopefully, it will start in one month's time. Back to this morning's game, we played well, but in the 45', our backline got complacent and our keeper was caught off his line, and 6 players countered and chipped our netminder. I really didn't think our team could come back from that mental blow, but they came out strong in the 2nd half and after a tactical substitution, we equalized in the 60th minute on a set piece (I really value how set pieces can be a difference in a match--ManU v Inter last night) With momentum on our side, we went ahead in the 79th minute. We went a 4-5-1, and held on to the one goal lead. It was a great win for our seniors as they worked extra hard to come back after that crushing first half goal!

The visiting youth club played against our young ones, but there was something strange about them. They were all huge! I know that age doesn't really exist in Ghana as the youth system is based on both weight and age (but primarily weight). I think we may be the only club in Ghana that tries to follow age groups. So, the opposing club's manager said, "He heard about our club's reputation of being quality--as being promoted to the premiership this season. So, in order to defeat us, he brought his u14 squad to play our u12, his u17 to play our U14. " The desire to win is so strong here, as it is back home, but is it worth sacrificing developing your players? Apparently, for some, yes. But I am fine with other clubs bringing older competition as it helps my players. And just so everyone knows...our boys played strong, possessed the ball well, and showed off their skills!

Ok, so I know I promised some pictures/video blog...be patient with me...it's coming soon!

Events of last weekend

As one of the guests of honor at the Cantonments Party, I felt incredibly uneasy sitting at the head table. As we sat under what seemed to be spotlights, we drank and ate before anyone else was served. Knowing what I know about fasting and how money is stretched for food, I grew sicker from thinking that the children and others were going hungry. But I ate the vegetables, beef kabobs, and chicken with an awkward enjoyment. The awkwardness coming from thinking that the 250 people were not going to eat, and the enjoyment stemming from how delicious it was! The truth is that Ghanaians are extremely hospitable, and the entire party waited for the guests of honor to eat and dance before they endulged. It was only when some of us danced was when the entire party starting dancing as well. And let me tell you, the players and community members have good hearts. They complimented me on my terrible dancing and c-walking. Yes, I c-walked. The players absolutely love when Obrunis dance as we tend to have zero rhythm whatsoever. But I'm thinking that they were actually not mocking my dancing because the next day they complimented me again...and children tell the truth no matter what! Or am I just choosing to think that? But the ones that have seen me dance, wow...you know the actual truth!

But mixed in with the dancing, I had a chance to address the community, thank the chairman, coaching staff, families, and the players. I also gave a brief outlook on the season for the senior squad, and then of course...continued with my dancing.

Five volunteers came within the past week, and we were able to play the Obrunis versus the senior team, and with a close result, 2-1 (PKs), we demonstrated the difference between the two sides. As the English and American games are quite similar, the Ghanaian style is much more beautiful with their skills and freedom to make mistakes without much consequence with the exception of a match observed last week (see previous post). But that's my favorite part of the job, educating coaches and it's something that I'd like to do when I return home. Some coaches tend to forget themselves, scream and shout for no apparent reason, and it's determental to the development of the player. The truth is that football is a game of mistakes, and it's those mistakes that will end up teaching the player. But with the pressure not to commit mistakes is the exact thing that will make players not try creative things. Especially with youth, we need to let them play the game and guide them into becoming imaginative players as that's what makes the Ghanaian style so fun to watch!

I promise more pictures the next time around, and possibly a video of a player demonstrating his skills! Oh, and maybe a video blog! Until next time...

"May-Boa-Soom"

I love learning new phrases in Twi, as it makes me look like the fun and relaxed Obruni that I am. As I say this phrase, "May-Boa-Soom" (phonetically spelled) very often to the school children who so willingly taught me it, I will no longer say "I will slap you" anymore. Today, Cantonments hosted a school tournament between the senior and youth sessions. Although the football was mediocre, the atmosphere was electric as some children were singing, playing a unique version of basketball, and loud cheers after each goal! However, the day ended with an 8 year old boy making a terrible blunder that led to a goal and ultimately the end of the tournament for his squad. From a distance, I witnessed (along with probably hundreds of people) a "small-boy" get lashed with a sugar cane on the back of his hands. This obviously infuriated me, but I calmly walked over to the coach and asked him the reason why he would do such a thing. He began to say that instead of dribbling in front of his goal, he should play it safely, and clear the ball from the penalty area. I agreed that it was a costly mistake for his team, but does that player actually know what he did wrong? Did you tell him (the player) how to fix it? All questions that didn't really receive an answer. I proceeded to tell him what he could have done in that situation as I would if I was back home.

The assistant coach pleaded with me that they know this isn't the "right way" for kids to learn, but this is the way that "African Schools and clubs" do things. The kids are disciplined, obedient, and "respectful" but only because they are afraid of being whipped. I would rather have players respect me as a person who understands the game and also respects them as people, regardless of age.

This conversation was a pleasant one even though on my way over I was wondering if I was being culturally-insensitive. But I think that's where the problem lies. If we are not able to talk about these things, then how are we going to be able to breach any topic? Talking may bring about understanding, and silence would have sent the wrong message. Football can only act as the icebreaker, but the main follow through is education. And Jonathan, the assistant coach, asked me to build his village a school, which is located 4 hours from Accra. It is just the funniest thing but not because I would have no clue how to build a school in Ghana or anywhere for that matter. Instead it reminded me of Three Cups of Tea and how Greg Mortenson, built 55 schools primarily for girls in Pakistan. I did not take Mortenson's lead and promise my new friend a school on my next trip. But if teachers are hitting students when they make errors, then where do we start? Teaching the teachers.

Football can bring pride to the school, and the players can transfer that feeling to the classroom, which is where the most success will occur. Because everyone knows that there is a slim chance in becoming a professional athlete, so it is extremely important for these students to stay in school. And what better way to do it with football? But even in our academy, some players have been abandoned by their parents and do not have the money to attend school. If they cannot go to school, they are left with hawking on the streets. This will enable the person or family to survive, but this is no way to solve cyclical problems. But for a lot of people, football is their salvation.

Guilt

After speaking with a housemate, my guilt has been confirmed regarding my opportunities in Ghana. While many people struggle to afford food and housing, I know that I'll be fine, and I cannot reconcile the guilt. I find time to relax, drink beer, and eat at western restaurants meanwhile the poor and mentally ill wash in the gutters and sewage systems. These people are completely ostracized, and my heart is filled with the pain that I cannot do more. The guilt is so overwhelming that I find myself struggling to go out, spending less than 1.5 GHC/day for food, and turning on my air conditioner. In the past week, I have been eating more due to the fact I have already lost 15 pounds in nearly 3 weeks.

Before this past week, I had eliminated Coke, coffee, juice, tea, and milk; I would only drink water. My diet included Egushi stew (kinda like spinach), rice, yam, and bread. My body spoke to me and said, "Mark, you have to eat." For a couple days, I felt extremely sick, and I knew it was only because of the lack of food. I went to the hospital and even though the doctor prescribed antibiotics, I felt better after I consumed Coke, chicken, and salted cashews. I had instantly recovered, and I continue to spend more on food despite my inability to rationalize the guilt. Because the truth is that people actually survive on such a diet even if they are malnourished, but some die.

My goals here seem to be much more long term without any short-term solutions. When I'm approached and asked for food, I rummage through my pockets and then hang my head because my money is safe in my bank account and secure in a lockbox. It makes football seem to be way down the priority list. But is it?

Just recently, the U20 Ghanaian National Team won the African Cup in Rwanda. The President proclaimed this is a great victory for the people of Ghana, and they should be treated like National Heroes. Football continues to be an outlet despite the poverty, corruption, and filth. The people need to act on their pride for football and let it leak to other aspects of life. Instead of former presidents allocating funds for six cars, luxourious houses, and all-expense paid overseas travel for 60 days/year, it could be spent on employment, sanitation, and urban development programs. I firmly believe that football can bring this change to Ghana, but only if we alter our mindsets to ultimately change our day-to-day actions. Ghana has talented footballers, and they will have a strong showing in 2010! This will only bring more pride and courage to tackle the ills of Ghanaian society.

The First Giveaway

Today was the hottest day so far, but it didn't deter the seniors to play in a fun tournament before the league starts! It was actually quite the site: loud music, dancers, and plenty of spectators!

I also took the day to handout some kits to some players! They were so delighted and grateful for be given a new training top! So, on behalf of the u12 players, Thank you to the Audrains! It is a huge honor in Ghana to receive such a gift!

Another big thank you to Drakey-Guy and FC Twente3! Growing up, I would never be caught wearing such a shoe, but it's not what brand you own, what condition it's in, but the amount of time the shoe has been on the training ground! And this boot, has seen plenty of dirt pitches! And this was a decent pair!

I hope you enjoyed the pictures! The morning stroll brings the same delights as last time. Little kids smiling and shouting Obruni, conversations with my favorite store clerks (the bread and pineapple ladies), and of course the occassional proposal.

The children giggle at my bizarre obruni faces and fall over when I reply with a phrase in Twi. When they ask for food, a piece of my soul floats away as I exhale, "I'm sorry. I don't have any food." I spend just over 1 cedi per day for food, which comes out to less than a dollar/day. As I continue my morning walk, I'm always stopped by the bread lady who attempts to set me up with her friend. My go-to response in that situation is always, "My wife would get really mad at me." Her sister always seems to plead, and it brings a smile to the early walk. There's no need to drink coffee with some of the things they say.

But it's just funny how things work out, I wasn't particularly feeling great when I came to Ghana--my achy traps, sore legs, and lack of sleep were my main ailments. It took me a day to start smiling and being a bit more social with the community in which I reside. But even a smile can change someone's day, and if not someone elses, then your own.

I reach the pitch--quite the site. My walk ends, and I'm immediately greeted by the senior players who are ready to start training. The dirt pitch reminds me where I am while the school children start their day with morning songs. Their singing is absolutely lovely, and it also brings a good distraction (to me at least). I am never disturbed during a session, but I find it very difficult to walk home. The practice is usually extended by at least 15-20 minutes for a meet and greet. I feel like I'm always meeting new people, while old friends are reintroduced with Akwaaba.

The main goal of the academy is to send players overseas, so a portion of the contract is sent back to invest into the community. The sad truth is that only a tiny portion of athletes will ever make it professionally. Decisions have to be made, and dreams may be shattered (or give players motivation to work harder). Right now, 4 players have a good chance of making it abroad. One of which, has an invitation to Portsmouth FC; however, his visa was denied. We are currently working on an appeal.

For my former players who are reading this, I referenced how hard American players train. And it's something that Ghanaian players can improve. To my former players, continue to train hard and always look to do something imaginative and creative with the ball/orange/socks/can/anything. The combination would be a quality finish....

Extra Time 1

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237322077883749490" style="DISPLAY: block; For coaching, I hit the top of the iceberg, but also made lasting friendships. The CFC players have been extremely outgoing in making me feel welcome, and even on the first day, I felt at home. You can imagine how a month felt.

I managed to coach about 6 hours a day while fighting off the Ghanaian women. I found that my "obruni" status instantly made me somewhat of a celebrity. Community members would greet me on the street and want to talk football. Children were surprised when I would talk in their local language, Twi. Their smiles were a relief from the hassle of bargaining.

I need to keep this blog short because I want to spend the majority of the day saying bye to all the people I met, but here's a picture for your enjoyment. I decided to go to Cape Coast for the weekend, and I didn't have enough time to publish one last Friday. It was a fun-filled weekend with Cape Coast Castle, African drumming and dancing, and Kakum National Park.

About 20 volunteers and I stayed at a hotel Friday Night so we can all make it out early the next morning for Cape Coast. The only good thing about the hotel was that it had air conditioning, but I ended up freezing because the staff didn't provide any blankets (or towels). It took about 2-3 hours to get to Cape Coast, and our first stop was the castle. Initially, I thought I was prepared to see the slave dungeons, but history classes didn't carry the same enthusiasm or knowledge that the tour guide did.

This bright spot in the center of the picture is the only light and ventilation for about 250 people in the cell. As they were chained to the walls and each other, they slept, ate, and defecated in the same area (until they boarded the ships).

After relaxing (and watching the US women play Japan), we went out for dinner and some drumming and dancing. Ghanaian children and adults performed and invited some to dance. Being the adventurous person I am, I joined in on the fun! I was going to post some pictures of my "amazing" dancing, but I decided I didn't want any evidence of that (even though my housemates think I'm Justin Timberlake).

Kakum National Park is a rainforest with a canopy walk, and I had my heart set on it when I was doing my research for this trip. The canopy walk is about 40 meters high and 350 meters in length. The walk is along 7 different suspension bridges that are slightly wider than both feet.

The weekend ended with some crocodiles and a CFC match. Although I wanted to wrestle them and at the very least be chased by one, I decided not to antagonize them and just take a few pictures. Unfortunately, the seniors lost their match 2-1; but we had a second string keeper that made a costly mistake to tie it 1-1. I feel it took the wind out of the other players, and they couldn't overcome the mental blow. CFC outplayed the opponents, but came up short with about 10 minutes to play. Sometimes in football, the better team loses.

Today, I had the day off and watched some of the Olympics. I hope to write less, and add more photos soon! Let me know if you can see the pictures better.

The "Real" Prince Harry

I am no longer called Prince Harry by the 5 ladies of the house. An English Coach has come to join us in Mama T's home. His name is also Mark (AKA: Prince Harry), but he will only be staying for one week. He's made a good adjustment so far because he willingly joined our "concert" last night. Four of us sang a song for Mama T, and Margerie belly danced for everyone. I sang "Drops of Jupiter" by Train even though I really wanted to sing "How Many Licks" by Lil' Kim. But I would have sounded like an idiot because I would have included the radio edits.

The neighborhood kids have been playing everyday because they are now out of school. They train everyday, and that's how they are going to learn the game. After the last session, we went to A-Life Supermarket and got some water because it was actually pretty hot and sunny. Earlier in the week, I asked Mama T to bake some cupcakes for the boys. They were super grateful, and they thanked me for the cupcakes.

The senior team won their match this past weekend due to some amazing defending! They were able to stay on their feet and be patient, and they actually had a shut out!!! David, Richard, Kofi, and I were extremely happy of this result! We've been working on team defense the past two weeks, and it has paid off and the players were also in good spirits. They've been working hard due to some extreme training sessions. During the past two weeks, our conditioning has been mostly agility work and bodyweight circuits. I put them through some lunges, squats (with jumps), and split lunges. We also have been doing the "Big 12", which is 12 push-ups 12 crunches, 11 push-ups, 11 crunches and then 10...9...8...7...all the way down to 1. It should last 3-4 minutes and is really tough. I was surprised at the number of SENIOR players that could not properly perform any of these exercises. So, another goal before I leave is to have the entire CFC Academy be able to do them (as we continue to work on defense).

Just recently, I got sick. It wasn't a probably of insects or bad food, just TOO MUCH FOOD. I splurged for the first time since I've been here on about 4 of Mama T's cupcakes, 2 chocolate bars, and 3 Fan Milks (vanilla ice cream). Then, I had dinner! It was just a bad combination, and all of a sudden I felt awful! The 4 ladies were like, "Mark, are you ok? You look like all colors of the rainbow. You're red, green, a little yellow, and your eyes are blue." I laughed, but then I went straight to the bathroom to vomit. I immediately felt better and drank some water to finish out the night.

Half-time

Well, it's been just over two weeks with two more remaining. At first, I felt that a month would be a long enough time, but now I'm feeling it may be too short. I've met so many people thus far and have established lasting friendships. Kofi, CFC coach, and the players constantly ask me how long am I staying in Ghana. I tell them, "Don't worry, you can get the tricks down before my two weeks are over." They consider it a deal, but at the same time, we've just begun and I can teach them much more than freestyling tricks.

The past two weeks I've evaluated their play with CFC coaches and we feel strongly that the month should be committed to defense. As I've said before, defensive knowledge is lacking because CFC often plays an offside trap. CFC players constantly make two-footed tackles; these tackles have broken many players legs and is obviously a foul. We've worked on defensive stance and posture, and the players have picked up on it very well. They've become more patient and make clean hard tackles. Then, scouts can come out and see well-rounded players.

In the past, a Newcastle scout has come out to see the club but unfortunately no one was picked up. However, within the past week, one of the senior players was given a trial with a Greek club. It was a long process getting a visa, but they did it and it proves that the Cantonments Academy is working. Even though CFC Seniors are in the 3rd division, their focus remains to be player development and not necessarily winning. Let's hope CFC and Projects Abroad can continue to mold athletes into quality footballers.

The weather has been surprisingly tolerable. It's technically the rainy season, but while I've been here, it's only rained 2-3 times. Usually there's an overcast that gives relief from the sun so it hasn't been very hot.

I found time to leave Cantonments to travel to other parts of Accra. I didn't feel welcome in New Town even though I was with a resident. In this district, the children would stop, stare, point, and laugh at the Obruni along with the adults. It made me feel miserable, so I decided to leave on the first Tro-Tro out of there. I also decided to go Accra Museum in Accra Central along with Osu Castle. An armed guard was very hostile with me and told me I could not go in. I obviously didn't question him and walked away at a quick pace. If only I had a football...(insert laughter).

I've set out to coach at Cantonments where my knowledge has been accepted. The players look forward to the training sessions and use them as an outlet from life. Some living conditions make me feel sad, but when I step on the pitch, I'm instantly happy. It's great to know that the players use football and school to escape.

Thanks for all the posts, e-mails, and messages! Keep 'em coming!!!

Scrambled Eggs, Anyone?

After attending a 2.5 hour mass with Mama T, I was asked to make an American breakfast because my housemates were tired of toast and coffee. They loved the scrambled eggs, and they want it everyday now. They said it tasted like McDonald's, but hopefully they don't consider my cooking similar to fast food! Geeez, I put some love into those eggs! In all honesty though, it was about time for me to cook. Although I try to help with the household chores, Mama T does not let me help the ladies cook or clean much.

Every meal is accompanied by American Pop Culture and random questions. Have you met Beyonce? Have you been to Wendy's? Do you like Starbucks? Do you know All-American Rejects? Do you like Tom Cruise or Justin Timberlake? Superman is my favorite hero! Do you know Paris Hilton? And with the straightest face, I say, "Actually, I'm Paris Hilton's cousin." They're quickly learning that I'm teasing them, but still continue to fall for it.

The neighborhood kids did not join us for breakfast, but they did show up to play. Twelve footballers came over with a sad-looking ball. You could see the bladder, and I traded one of my soccer balls for theirs. Although the ball had about 1/4 of the air (and it barely held that), the boys played with such skill! But the most enjoyable part was that they never complained about the ball, and they played with a noticeable love for the game!

I was so proud to coach them, but at the same time the funniest and strangest thing happened. After their was a stoppage and I gave them coaching advice, they applauded me! I had no clue what to do! So I smiled and applauded them, which I'm sure was equally awkward for them. But apparently, it's not uncommon for players to applaud their coaches in Ghana. I also found out that the kids are not neighborhood kids at all; they don't reside in Nungua, but in a really poor area. They asked me for water, but our water ran out. So, we went to a nearby supermarket and got yogurt and water.

I'd still like to travel to Kakum National Park on a weekend, but I told the neighborhood kids that I can coach them on the weekend. I may sacrifice sleeping in the rainforest to coach 'em. Maybe I can squeeze it in sometime between their match and training though.

After I coached yesterday, I played in a game that was supposed to be at 3pm. I've experienced some culture shock in the form of "Ghanaian time" (as Mama T calls it). The game actually started at 430pm, which made me go crazy! Plenty of you know, how obsessed I am with time, scheduling, and organization. So, I'm sure you can imagine how I was pacing around the dirt pitch. I think I'm getting better at relaxing...I think. Until next time!

"Tro-Tro" Proposal

A Ghanaian woman asked me to marry her today! While on a "Tro-Tro" she told me that she has never been to the States and would like to live there someday! She went on to say that she had a son, and a football coach would be a great father for her child. I laughed and said, "But I only met you 5 minutes ago."

Tro-Tros are privately owned vans that probably should be in a junkyard. But somehow they take about 15-20 people into town for what is equivalent to 40 cents for an hour ride. The drivers are terrible and at times I fear for my life, and I'm not exaggerating. So more often that not, I decide to take a taxi, which is about 4 cedis or about $4 for a single ride. Taxis are slightly more comfortable than the tro-tro, and I use them during rush hour.

When I want to buy something, I have to bargain for the price. At first, it has been really fun, but I'm quickly getting tired of it. Drivers and vendors "high ball" me and then I ask for a ridiculously low price. I bought an Essien jersey the other day, and he was asking 28 cedis! It's a Ghana National Team Jersey, and it's Puma...I think. I ended up buying it for 8 cedis.

I decided to take a break from coaching and play with the senior team in a friendly match against a second division team. They were extremely fast, but for the time I was on the pitch I felt I was hanging with them. The community didn't agree. About 10 people after the match approached me (at different times) and said pretty much the same thing, "You are a good player, but you need to get fit." I laughed and said, "Give me a break, I'm a coach!"

I have a newfound respect for football. I wasn't having a tremendously great morning, and I didn't want to bargain for a taxi. The conditions of certain parts of Ghana can be emotionally draining, and the combination made me feel sad and unmotivated. I arrived 30 minutes early for training, and as the players started to come in, I became happy. It reminds me of a previous post.

For some reason, I have been unable to upload pictures in a slideshow, but I will be posting several pictures similar to the "Flag Presentation" and "Cantonments" soon enough!!! Have a great weekend!

DING-DONG!!!

The other day, I woke up to the door bell ringing (and so did the rest of the house). It was 615am, and the neighborhood kids walked down my street and rang every single house in order to find me. I walked out the front door, through the gravel, and opened the gate. They asked, "Can you coach us?" I felt extremely bad when I had to turn them away, but I had to make it into town by 8am for training at Cantonments. My housemates continue to tease me about how I'm already famous in Ghana!

I've seen three matches so far for CFC: the seniors, u12, and u14 teams. During the senior game, the coaches and fans all ran onto the pitch after each of their two goals! I definitely was shocked by this, and thought to myself can someone love football more than me?!?!?! The u12 and u14 are soooo incredibly talented; they show great composure and creativity offensively. Even though the teams lack any defensive knowledge, they still won their matches.

Last Sunday, I was able to take some time away from football and sit down with Mama T. We walked to her neighbor's house to buy some Star and Club beer. We sat, drank a little, and talked for a bit. It was nice just to relax instead of being on/around the pitch for 12 hours a day. Mama T continues to try to force feed me. After dinner, she gave me a half of loaf of banana bread...I ate it all. And all the food thus far has been amazing! Other volunteers haven't been so lucky. A few have gotten sick and have been eating just bread. I can tell that Mama T is a retired caterer!

Last night, I was able to play some football with Brian and Vanessa. Afterwards, I helped them with their homework, and just yesterday they started calling me Uncle Mark. I obviously have mixed feelings about this because I'll be leaving in 3 weeks, but many Ghanaians are trying to teach me to relax a bit and go with the flow.

I have quickly established relationships with many different people, and football has been the icebreaker. I hope to continue to use these training sessions as a bridge between the cultures and to provide certain types of exercises that can be related to other aspects of life.

Obruni!!

"Obruni!" That's what the neighborhood kids call me as they follow me to the tro-tro stop. It means white man, and I've read it's a term of endearment. They ask me to coach them when they play soccer. Ha, I didn't realize that soccer coaches are a hot item in Ghana. I told them that I would, but my first commitment is Cantonments FC; where I assistant coach for three teams.

I have three training sessions under my belt, and let me tell you...these are excellent players, and I'm happy to be out here trying to make them better. Kwasi, the manager of CFC reiterated what I already knew about some Ghanaians, "Football gives hope to our people, and it is a way for us to forget about the harsh reality of life." The players are in school from 7am-4pm due to extra classes, and they train everyday after school for about 2 hours. The u14 and u17 teams have the entire community watch them, even at training! Soccer has been an outlet for them, and it helps build confidence to assist them in other aspects of life. I am sure the children can transfer their success on the pitch and into the classroom.

In the same breath, Projects Abroad is trying to build a program centered around sending players to Europe to play. These players are well-disciplined, call me "sir" (ha, yea...what a joke), and have the skill to become great. But the sad reality is that only a small fraction only make it professionally. But the combination of education and athletics can mold these children into working professionals that can improve Ghana.

I'm off to watch the CFC senior team in Ghana's national stadium. It should be a fun time, and I bet I'll see some great soccer! I hope all is well, and let me know what you're up to!

Akwaaba (welcome)

So it took about 3 hours for someone to tell me that Ghana beat the United States in the World Cup! I'm not shocked by this, but the obvious response was how the U.S. was the only team not to lose to Italy (world cup chamnps).

I've been overwhelmed by the amount of taxis that honk at me, and it seems like they will do anything for fares. Other than that, I have felt welcomed by the Ghanaian culture; the people are so accepting and relaxed, which has made all my nerves go away!

Mama T (my host mother) is what I expected. She is always smiling and always trying to feed me. But I was somewhat disappointed to have spaghetti as my first meal. That soon came to an end when I had "Red Red (a stew-like bean dish)" with fried plantains and fish.

My host sisters include 4 women: 1 from France, 2 from Senegal, and 1 from Cameroon. They are extremely outgoing, and we went out for ice cream yesterday. There is also a young boy named Brian (2 yrs old) and a girl named Vanessa (age 4); they loved the gift I gave them...a Chicago Fire Soccer Ball (ooops, I mean football). I showed them some tricks, and they could not stop laughing!

Soccer has been an outlet for me from being away from home, and it is the most natural feeling thus far. I can see that Ghanaians love the game, and we have been able to share the same interest. I played a 5v5 game, and the fans (yes, fans...at a pickup game) were cheering very loudly! I played on a dirt field with rocks everywhere with a old worn ball that was barely holding in the air.

I can't wait until I meet the teams that I'll be coaching, which is planned for tomorrow. Pictures will be coming soon!

Making it Possible!

When I started thinking about fundraising, I had no idea that I would receive as much support that I have.
